Any given day, you can find me hanging out at home with my dog and my beautiful wife, jetting off for quick getaways to escape the Canadian winter to places like Hawaii or Palm Springs, having cooking competitions with my wife (I always win), or binging on our favourite Netflix shows.
I didn’t always have this life…
I grew up in the northern Canadian city of Prince George, BC, working my way up in the restaurant industry, eventually becoming a Red Seal Chef. However, in my 30s I knew I needed a change from the high stress, fast paced restaurant life, and looked towards a career in Real Estate that I thought could give me the life and freedom that I desired. I had this image of working for myself, meeting new people, making good money and getting to (finally) dictate my own work hours.
Little did I realize, I’d be working harder and longer hours than I ever worked in the restaurant biz. I worked my tail off for years, just to get my foot in the door and make a name for myself, sometimes never seeing the light of day outside my office walls.
Eventually, the money did come, and the passion and joy I have for helping my clients made it all worthwhile; but the long hours and the endless work never got better. No matter what I did, I always seemed to be working weekends, holidays, evenings, and even answering text messages and replying to emails in bed!
There’s got to be a better way
After more than a decade of working every weekend, every evening, every holiday, and STILL not being able to escape the ups and downs of a commission lifestyle, I finally hit a wall.
I thought “is this where I’m going to be at age 50? 55? even 60? Will I ever be able to retire? What if the economy tanks, what will I do then? When will I get to enjoy my life?”
It seemed like nothing I did would change the fact that in order to make ends meet and earn that next commission cheque, I had to trade my time for money and all the Real Estate Industry preached was “SELL MORE HOUSES!!!”. It felt like the system was rigged, and there was nothing I could do about it.
A Chance Discovery
By chance, in 2017, I met my now business partner, Brandon, on an airplane en-route to a marketing conference. We immediately clicked, and Brandon shared with me his journey and experience with a brand new business model for real estate agents that was taking the U.S. by storm. Virtual offices, revenue sharing, passive income, no office fees, stock opportunities, training, and the best technology in the business. It all sounded way too good to be true, and it hadn’t been launched in British Columbia yet, so I brushed it off, and went back to grinding away for my old brokerage.
A few months later, Brandon reached out and told me that they where about to launch in British Columbia, so I decided to take a look, you know, just to entertain him. As he showed me the details, I thought “there is no way this is real, can’t be. It was too perfect”. It was unlike anything that I had ever seen before.
Even if a portion of what was being shared with me was true, it would be an absolute game-changer. I didn’t want to miss out. I couldn’t afford to… so I went ALL in. Looking back on that decision I often think, “what if I wouldn’t have taken the time to hear this model out? Where would I be?” I’d still be sitting at my desk at my old brokerage, grinding away, and missing out on my life.
A New Way Of Life
Since making the move, my life has improved in so many ways, but I’ve still stayed the same. I still work with buyers and sellers to find or sell their homes, but now I also have the time and income flexibility to be able to spend time with my family, take vacations, and work on my passion projects.
Real Estate has given me the ability to help the less fortunate in my community as well as help other Entrepreneurs succeed as I have done. In 2019, I founded a local community movement called 100 HEROES Prince George, where local citizens come together to nominate and give back to deserving local charities. This initiative has raised over $50,000 for local non-profit organizations, and has had a ripple effect across our community, and the country.
I’ve been able to impact other agent’s lives (150+ and counting on my team now!) through educating, training, and supporting them to achieve their ultimate career goals in real estate.
Oh, and I still sell houses! I just don’t STRESS about it anymore.
My goal is to be an open book of information, in the aim of helping as many other agents as I can achieve their dream lifestyle, and maybe one day we can meet over a glass of wine in a tropical location somewhere, and toast to the “old” lives we once led.
Getting to meet the legendary marketing genius Gary Vaynerchuk in NYC (can you tell how excited I am?!)
My beautiful wife Bailey and I, enjoying a glass of wine on vacation.
